Cardano Aims to Outpace Solana: Explore the Benefits of Ouroboros Leios

Cardano is preparing to significantly enhance its transaction efficiency with the implementation of a new consensus algorithm, Leios. Once the update is fully implemented, the blockchain aims to surpass Solana in speed while maintaining decentralization.

Increasing Scalability While Preserving Decentralization

Ouroboros Leios is an advanced version of the current Proof of Stake mechanism that powers Cardano. This update builds upon the “Praos” variant but addresses the limitations in network and computing resource usage. The current system cannot fully utilize the available resources at each node. As explained in the Leios technical report, existing Ouroboros algorithms face efficiency challenges due to data and communication dependencies.

Cardano recognizes that the current system is not performing at its full potential. To solve this, IOHK plans to introduce Leios to significantly boost transaction speeds while preserving the network’s existing security.

Key Features and Accelerated Development

Leios introduces several new features, such as “layered transaction fees” and “faster chain synchronization.” These features aim to improve the overall user experience. Cardano’s founder, Charles Hoskinson, firmly believes that Leios can make the network faster than Solana without sacrificing decentralization. He posted on social media, “Leios makes us faster than Solana without losing decentralization.”

However, despite Hoskinson’s confidence, some users have criticized the project’s progress. For example, one user, Rizza, expressed frustration over the perceived lack of development. He argued that while Leios was announced in 2022, there had been no visible progress since then.

Increased Development in Q4 2024

Hoskinson responded to these concerns by affirming that development will accelerate in Q4 2024. He explained that a dedicated prototype team managed by IOG is actively working on Leios. He also added that after completing the Peras CIP, development efforts will ramp up. Cardano expects several companies to collaborate on making this ambitious update a reality.

If Cardano successfully surpasses Solana’s transaction speed with Leios, the value of ADA could see a positive impact.
